Canadian Newcomer's Journey to Belongingness
Dr. Robin Yap's Stages of Belongingness
Acculturation is iterative. There are times when we are at the Bliss stage and at times at Brand. There are moments when we feel like we're back at Bliss or Berate stages again. This cyclical process allows us to refine our perceptions and sense of belonging in our host country.
We've adapted Eckes and Law's work from their book The More-Than-Just-Surviving Handbook (Portage & Main Press, 2000) into the four stages of acculturation of working professionals. We then incorporated the belongingness survey work of Dr. Bonnie M. Hagerty to gather data. We've identified the validity of this model in this research.
